Second best icon goes
With Jairzinho, Gerd Müller and Xabi Alonso, the community can look forward to exciting new icons for FIFA 23, which celebrates its release at the end of September. While three new icons enter the FIFA stage for the first time, six former icons will say goodbye at the same time. One of them was the second most powerful icon in the whole game so far: Diego Maradona.
After the death of the former Argentinian top star a legal dispute arose, whereupon Maradona was already removed in FIFA 22. Also the card of Marc Overmars was already removed in FIFA 22 after a harassment scandal and will therefore also not be present in FIFA 23. Other departures in the Icon Class include Ryan Giggs, Pep Guardiola, Filippo Inzaghi and Deco.

Demoted to FUT Heroes
While Giggs, Guardiola, Inzaghi and Deco had no relevance with FIFA players due to their mediocre attributes, two icons were demoted to FUT Heroes in advance. Okocha and Nakata, who still had icon status in FIFA 22, will now receive a FUT Hero card in FIFA 23. Whether these cards will be used more often by the community than their past icon versions remains to be seen.
